Sayula II: Mexico's Historic Voyage Around the World

As part of the FASMA 2026 program, audiences are invited to discover the remarkable story of the Sayula II, the legendary Mexican yacht that claimed first place in the 1973–1974 Whitbread Round the World Race, one of the world's most demanding and prestigious sailing competitions.

The extraordinary expedition was led by Captain Ramón Carlin Lima, who, at the age of 50 and with only five years of sailing experience, chose to pursue what many believed was an impossible dream. Driven by an unwavering passion for the sea, he assembled a young international crew of eleven sailors, including his wife Paquita Carlin, who joined the team during the first leg of the race.

The crew sailed across some of the world's most challenging oceans, enduring towering waves, violent storms, and hurricane-force winds while completing an extraordinary circumnavigation that tested their courage, resilience, and teamwork.
