Cartonería & Alebrijes Workshop

As part of the FASMA 2026 program, this workshop offers an exciting introduction to one of Mexico's most beloved folk art traditions: cartonería, the art of papier-mâché. Participants will learn to create colorful alebrijes—fantastical creatures that combine imagination, craftsmanship, and vibrant artistic expression into extraordinary sculptural works.

Led by acclaimed master artisan Karel Gorenc, seven-time consecutive winner of the regional "Judas and Alebrijes" Cartonería Competition, the workshop guides participants through every stage of the creative process, from designing and sculpting to painting and finishing their own original alebrije.


Discover the Magic of Mexican Folk Art

Alebrijes have become internationally recognized symbols of Mexico's artistic imagination. Inspired by mythical creatures and dreamlike visions, these colorful sculptures combine real and imaginary animals into unique handcrafted works full of personality, movement, and symbolism.

With small class sizes and personalized instruction, participants receive individual guidance while learning traditional techniques that have made cartonería one of Mexico's most treasured artistic crafts.

The Cartonería & Alebrijes Workshop provides a unique opportunity to experience one of Mexico's most vibrant artistic traditions. Through creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage, participants will create their own handcrafted alebrije while discovering the remarkable artistry behind this iconic form of Mexican folk art.

Schedule: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday · 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Minimum Enrollment: 2 weeks.
Materials: Included.
Class Size: Minimum 3, maximum 6 students.

Tuition: MXN $6,313.50 (2 weeks).
Deposit: MXN $3,000.
Discount: 45% discount for Mexican nationals with a valid INE identification.
