Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Collaborations

From August 8 to November 9, 2026, this exhibition invites visitors to discover the work of Manuel Álvarez Bravo through the creative dialogues he developed with some of the most influential artistic and intellectual figures of the twentieth century. More than a chronological survey, Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Collaborations offers a broader perspective on the network of affinities, encounters, and exchanges that shaped the career of one of the great masters of modern photography.

The exhibition reveals how Álvarez Bravo’s work was nourished by a period of intense artistic vitality, in which photographers, painters, writers, filmmakers, and intellectuals participated in the construction of new ways of understanding modernity, identity, and image-making in Mexico and beyond. Through this approach, the exhibition highlights not only the aesthetic and poetic strength of his work, but also the web of collaborations that helped establish his legacy within the visual history of the twentieth century.

About the Exhibition

This exhibition is an adaptation of Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Collaborations, originally presented by the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa. The original exhibition was curated by Mia Laufer, with an adaptation for this venue by Claudia Perulles Marín. The project has been made possible through the joint work of the Archivo Manuel Álvarez Bravo, under the direction of Aurelia Álvarez Urbajtel, and the Instituto Allende Casa Museo, directed by Jaime Fernández, with exhibition coordination by Talía Lara.

Rather than presenting the artist’s work in isolation, the exhibition emphasizes the relationships Manuel Álvarez Bravo established with key creators and thinkers of his time. Here, photography emerges as a space of exchange between disciplines, sensibilities, and historical contexts, revealing the richness of an artistic practice that engaged with painting, literature, cinema, muralism, and the cultural transformations of post-revolutionary Mexico.

About Manuel Álvarez Bravo

Manuel Álvarez Bravo (1902–2002) is regarded as one of the founders of modern photography and the most important representative of twentieth-century Latin American photography. His work, developed from the late 1920s through the 1990s, is distinguished by a deeply poetic, humanistic, and symbolic vision, capable of transforming everyday life into imagery charged with mystery, sensitivity, and universal resonance.

Born in Mexico City, he developed his artistic practice largely as a self-taught photographer, exploring from an early age the technical and expressive possibilities of the camera. Throughout his career, he moved through different aesthetic explorations—from pictorialism to modern experimentation and documentary photography—until forging a singular visual language deeply connected to the cultural spirit of his time. His work belongs to what is often called the Mexican Renaissance, a period shaped by both the drive toward modernity and the search for a cultural identity rooted in history, archaeology, popular life, and collective memory.

Álvarez Bravo collaborated with major figures in art and culture such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti, Henri Cartier-Bresson, María Izquierdo, Rufino Tamayo, Carlos Mérida, Pablo O’Higgins, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, and Sergei Eisenstein, among many others. His work received international recognition through distinctions such as France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Hasselblad Foundation International Award, and the Master of Photography honor from the International Center of Photography in New York.
