Otherness: 40 Years of Painting the Other

Drawing from four decades of artistic exploration, this lecture-reflection offers a thoughtful journey into one of the most relevant and universal themes of our time: otherness—the ability to recognize others not as strangers or outsiders, but as reflections of our shared humanity.

Through personal experiences, artistic practice, and encounters with diverse cultures and communities, the artist explores how painting has become a tool for understanding both the differences that separate us and the deeper connections that unite us.

Forty Years Painting the Other

For more than forty years, the artist's work has focused on portraying individuals, communities, and realities that reveal the complexity of human identity. Every portrait, story, and encounter has served as an opportunity to question cultural assumptions and explore the nature of belonging.

From Croatians living through the dissolution of Yugoslavia, to Maya and Comcaac communities working to preserve their cultural identity, the artist has engaged with people whose lives reflect both resilience and the ongoing search for self-definition.

Beyond Difference

This presentation examines how the seemingly visible markers that distinguish us—nationality, religion, language, culture, and history—can become pathways toward understanding when we focus on the experiences and values we share.

Orthodox monastic communities, Indigenous peoples, fellow travelers, artists, and even the artist himself become part of a broader exploration into identity, connection, and the common threads that bind humanity together.

Audience Conversation

The presentation will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes, followed by a dedicated question-and-answer session where participants can engage directly with the artist regarding his work, experiences, and creative process.

An optional visit to the artist's studio space may also be offered, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to continue the conversation while exploring the environment where much of this artistic journey has taken shape.
